Sheet 5: a seated figure, to Hold
Started with no generated image: an authored value plan. Then the loop: ChatGPT refines, the critic reads, the artist answers with native tools, ChatGPT again, until Russell called Hold.
Plan and first drawing

Loop 1: ChatGPT, then critique, then the artist

Critique of gpt1 (sheet 5, ChatGPT refinement)
Inputs: gpt1.png; critic/gpt1.packet.txt (canon, tonal, marks, colour, route); the ledger (sheet5/ledger.jsonl) as the build; brief = hybrid-01 s0_brief/BRIEF.md, plus Russell's refine prompt. Passes written in order by the orchestrating assistant (not independent model calls). Coordinates are gpt1 pixels (1445 x 1089).
1. RIDP (from the ledger)
Lineage: (1) authored value plan, no image: figure from behind, low right, no face, a black slab under the knees, upper left open. (2) Hands drew it: masses only, a disc head on a rectangular back. (3) ChatGPT refined it, "you can invent". Decisions carried through: the placement (low right), the open upper left, the light knee mass, the dark band at the right edge, the black low in the frame. Defaults that entered at step 3: the back of the head became a face in three-quarter view looking down; the black slab became a cat; the dark band became a chair back; the ground became a scribbled floor. Peak: step 2 held the figure anonymous and the black as weight only. Lost after it: the anonymity of the turned figure, and the black as a weight with no name. Return to Sketcher: the structure survived; the generator's inventions are nouns laid on structural slots.
2. Sketcher
Gate: the surface declares itself as made (dense hatching, open contour in the knee form). Three structural failures:
- Weight piles right and low [dx 0.2264] [dy 0.1047], and edge energy presses the frame [xp 0.4114]: the chair black is welded to the right edge (to my eye).
- Focus does not survive blurring [focus shift at 64px 0.74]: at a squint the face and the cat compete; with 14 salience clusters [col_focal_count 14] and the largest holding a third [col_primary_focal_dominance 0.3574], nothing leads.
- The black is not committed [black 0.030, solidity 0.63, rubric 0/2]: the cat's black is broken by internal texture (to my eye: fur strokes and whiskers make it a drawing of a black thing, not a black).
Default geometry: the figure turned toward the frame's centre, the head at an upper third, the cat walking into the open field: a probable staging. Route: OMEGA (overstrain: load without articulation) [vcli_g 2.956] [sci 2.092], quadrant label "collapse into noise". Agree on the route; the noise is in the floor scribble and the robe hatching, not in the open knees. One structural move: the black. Keep its place and weight under the open knees; remove what makes it a cat (ears, legs, tail, whiskers); commit its core to the darkest the medium makes. Expect black_area to stay >= 0.02 with higher solidity; focus shift at 64px should fall as the face/cat competition is resolved toward one dark.
3. Artist's Lens
What keeps it from being more: every passage is finished to the same degree except the knees. Delay: the eye arrives at the face at once (resolves at once), then the cat, then rests on the knees. The knee form, open searching lines with a hand resting on it, is the only place that holds. Three small, reversible moves: (a) take the face back so the hair mass and the hand carry the head; (b) let the floor go to paper so the knees and the black sit on nothing; (c) leave the knee form exactly as it is. Route language: Ω: counter the face's light with withdrawal, not with more drawing.
4. Marrowline
Brief words that set defaults: "seated female figure" (the generator supplied a face to make her a person), "vulnerable" (the downcast face performs it). Words treated as rules and broken: "her face is left indistinct, dissolving into gesture or shadow": the face is the most resolved passage. Words kept: "absence should be intentional" (the knee form, the upper left). Emblem: "a woman in a robe watches a black cat pass". It summarizes in one phrase: the trope won. What the image avoids: an unnamed dark. The cat performs weight (omen, familiar, companion) it has not earned in the structure. Collapse tags: emblem by invention, face resolution, uniform finish. Severity: medium. Counter-move: unname the black. It costs the story the picture tells; it keeps the weight the structure asked for.
Handoff (in the drawing machine's tools)
- Target: squint the cat region (blur and 2 values) so the hand meets a low dark mass, not an animal; then one-black (connect-mass, minInk 0.95, softness guard) along its axis. Preserve its position and extent. Expect: black solidity up, the cat unreadable.
- Canvas: kneaded-eraser take-back of the face (features only; keep the hair mass). Expect: the head reads as hair and turn; focus moves toward the hand on the knees.
- Target: lighten the floor scribble to paper (keep a breath of ground under the black and the robe's foot). Expect: quiet share up; the knees sit on nothing.
Must stay unresolved: the knee form and the hand on it. Do not: add a second figure or object; darken the open field; restore the face because it "looks unfinished".

Loop 2

Loop 2: critique of gpt2a / gpt2b, and the artist's reference (P)
Check against loop 1's handoff predictions (gpt1 -> gpt2a / gpt2b)
- focus shift at 64px: 0.74 -> 0.02 / 0.02 (predicted down: met)
- black_area: 0.030 -> 0.057 / 0.049 (predicted >= 0.02: met); solidity 0.63 -> 0.40 / 0.37 (predicted up: not met)
- face withdrawn: gpt2a turns the head fully away (back of the head); gpt2b keeps the face as a digital blur
- cat unnamed: both (a black pool); floor to paper: both; knees kept: both
Route OMEGA for both [vcli_g 2.83 / 2.82] [sci 2.39 / 2.43].
Reading (orchestrating assistant; not independent passes)
- gpt2b: the take-back is rendered as a software blur, not material lifted from tooth: to my eye it reads as a censored face. Not carried forward.
- gpt2a, carried forward. Not at Hold:
- the pool is flat digital ink with no tooth, unlike every other passage (to my eye);
- it floats, about 50 px from the robe (measured on the Hands canvas): a hole or a rug, not a shadow;
- the head is a solid black helmet with no turn, a second black competing with the pool.
- The knee form and the hand still hold.
Artist's reference (all native: Hands, eraser, intentions)
- M: Hands draws gpt2a (restraint 0.4, 2969 strokes): the pool acquires tooth.
- N: eraser lifts a cheek plane in the head (box 780,150,850,250, strength 0.55): a turn, no face.
- O: pool-to-robe (connect-mass, 10 actions) and break-edge on the pool's top (16 actions). The pulls left pale worm-shaped bites inside the top.
- P: heal-bites (connect-mass, 11 actions).
Critic on P: focus shift at 64px 0.01; black 0.030 (solidity 0.46); VCLI-G 2.82, SCI 2.49; route OMEGA.
Handoff to the next loop (for a generator or the artist)
Preserve: the turned head with its cheek plane, the knee form and hand, the pool as the robe's shadow, the open left two thirds. Open question for the next look: whether the pool is too long and level (it repeats the ground line), and whether the chair black at the right edge and the pool make a closed L. Do not: return a face; name the dark; add a floor.

Hold

Notes
Sheet 5: no generated image anywhere
Target = authored value plan (plan.json, base {"paper": [1100, 829]}): figure low-right, seen from behind and cut by the right edge, back of the head (no face), drawn-up knees lighter, one black under the knees, upper left open, a light ground band.
- A: 1725 strokes, Kollwitz charcoal, restraint 0.5. The plan is rendered faithfully as masses. Read: a blocky figure from behind; head a dark disc on a rectangular back.
- Critic: VCLI-G 2.73, SCI 2.73, route OMEGA; black_area 0.016 (solidity 0.86); white_area 0.74.
- propose.py: black rule did not fire (a black exists). One ruled edge found: the bottom of the black (179 px). No rule addresses the shapes' form.
- P: break-edge on the bottom of the black, loss 0.6901 -> 0.0064, 21 actions. The pushes read as light scratches under the black.
- compose.py fix made during this sheet:
raggednoise leaked faint specks outside a shape; now limited to near the shape.
Round trip with ChatGPT (gpt/)
- gpt1.png: Russell's ChatGPT refinement. Prompt (verbatim): "Refine this image with the VTL style, keeping overall look and feel, but seeking additional consistency in mark making, enhance mood and add loose mark making. You can invent."
- H1.png: Hands (kollwitz-charcoal, restraint 0.5, seed 7) redraws gpt1 as its target. gpt_vs_H1.png side by side.
- Critic (both): route OMEGA.
- black_area: A 0.0161 -> gpt1 0.0297 -> H1 0.0134. hard edges: 0.091 -> 0.349 -> 0.351. midtone share: 0.147 -> 0.100 -> 0.108.
- In gpt1 the black under the knees became a black cat; the light knees mass became a loose open form under the hand; the figure gained a face in three-quarter view (looking down), a robe, and a dark chair-back at the right edge.
Critic -> artist on gpt1 (artist/)
Order: critic reads gpt1 (passes/CRITIQUE.md), artist executes the handoff with the tools, Hands draws, critic re-reads.
- G: target = gpt1 with the cat region squinted (blur 9, 2 values) and the floor lightened; Hands 3779 strokes. The squint kept the silhouette (ears, legs, tail): still a cat. Floor went to paper.
- H: eraser: face taken back (head reads as hair and turn); legs, ears, tail lifted; charcoal ghosts of the legs remain.
- I: one-black on the core: a black bar over ghost legs.
- J: swallow-legs (connect-mass, width 46) + break-edge on the top: the dark is no longer an animal; two bands with a pale seam.
- K: close-seam: one mass.
Measured against the handoff's own predictions (gpt1 -> K): black_area 0.0297 -> 0.0177 (predicted >= 0.02: not met); black solidity 0.63 -> 0.49 (predicted up: not met); focus shift at 64px 0.74 -> 0.80 (predicted down: not met). dx +0.226 -> +0.246; xp 0.411 -> 0.362. Route OMEGA throughout. Visual: face withdrawn (met); the dark unnamed as a cat (met); floor to paper (met). The dark is now a rectangular block: it reads as a box or crate. Compare: artist/gpt_trace_artist.png (gpt1 | H1 traced | K).
