A drawing machine that is criticised, and argues back
A local system for making drawings by moving between platforms: generators, a learned charcoal hand, an eraser, small checked edits, and a critic built from the Visual Thinking Lens. Every move is recorded. A drawing stops only at an argued Hold.

What it is
A motor that draws like a hand
The marks come from Hands: learned mark vocabularies (here Käthe Kollwitz's charcoal), laid stroke by stroke on a real canvas, each stroke accepted only if it pays for itself. Language models never write coordinates.
Sources are targets, never pixels
A Midjourney image, a ChatGPT refinement, a museum drawing, a rendered still-life stage or a few authored value shapes become a value plan. Hands draws toward it; nothing generated is pasted onto a canvas.
Edits that can be checked
Small native actions (keep this paper, join these darks, break this ruled edge, lay this ground even) chosen by a measured loss, with guards: nothing changes outside its region, a soft edge is not damaged, a later edit cannot undo an earlier one, and every result replays exactly.
A critic that can say no
The VTL kernels, tonal and mark readers and colour analyser produce a packet of numbers with what each may and may not mean; the engine passes read it. The critic may recommend abandoning a direction, and its predictions are checked against the next image.
A record of every move
A ledger line per pull between platforms (tool, platform, hashed inputs and outputs, the prompt verbatim, who made the call), and a lineage video that separates the line that was kept from the branches that were not.
A method, not a pipeline
An inquiry before an appearance; thumbnails in sets with criticism between them; the strongest counterexample to the favourite; a passage of uninterrupted work; Hold argued from relations that can be pointed to.
The loop
Four bodies of work
Narrative: a figure, a field, an open cage

Still life: teacup and apple

Sheet 5: a seated figure

Sheet 4: hands and two heads

Videos
A sibling build, Study Wall, works on what comes before the drawing and around it: a brief read before any picture exists, a wall of studies, an argued choice, and paintings that must survive a critic's test.
