Visual stages, comparisons and decisions from the original run. Internal prompts, operating documents and downloadable implementation files are omitted. Some interactive comparisons are shown as separate images.
Castle / Path / Sunset
Must the path take us to the castle?
charcoal drawing, castle in the distance, path to guide, sunset.
Status: observation. No artistic Hold. The first preference did not survive its comparison. The current branches expose a larger question; neither is declared finished.
Arriving, or passing below?

The banks acquire heavier rock planes; the route still climbs to a familiar castle destination. Native simplification has not removed descriptive excess. Retain as the arrival alternative.

The road traverses the slope rather than delivering us to the castle. A consequential structural alternative, but not yet an earned choice: the road may merely point at sunset, and the castle may be incidental.
The original prompt does not say that the castle must be the destination. D tests that inherited assumption. But replacing an arrival with a bypass does not establish originality. Its strongest objection remains open: does the castle still matter, or could it disappear without consequence?
Before making: read the language
castle in the distance
Provisional association: A large centered heraldic silhouette may stand in for experienced distance.
A legible castle need not dominate; atmospheric scale can establish distance.
path to guide
Provisional association: A bright continuous S-curve may answer the whole picture before the eye has explored it.
Guidance can be direct and worthwhile; test interruption rather than assuming ambiguity is better.
sunset
Provisional association: A sun disk, mist and lone traveller may provide an instant narrative absent from the brief.
Low light and long lateral shadows may carry evening without a disk. A disk is not intrinsically a failure.
charcoal drawing
Provisional association: Roughness can become interchangeable scratch decoration.
Separate earth mass, rubbed distance, reserved light and sparse structural edges.
The actual work, including failures

Distance before obstruction
The requested interruption was not substantially realized. The smaller castle and successive slopes still make distance legible. Retain as the actual largely-continuous comparator, not a successful interruption. Mark handling became much more uniformly descriptive.
Inputs: S01.

The interruption test
An occluding shoulder makes the bend busier. It does not clearly improve spatial force. Initial preference for interruption is not supported here. Other vegetation and texture changed: this is not an isolated pixel experiment.
Inputs: A.

Native value inquiry
32 authored Hands/Canvas commands. The path and falling land directions survive without scrub detail. Soft bands are schematic and weak in value range; this is a diagnostic, not an artwork or proof of improvement.
Inputs: Blank paper, visually informed by A and S01.

Construction return
The banks acquire heavier rock planes; the route still climbs to a familiar castle destination. Native simplification has not removed descriptive excess. Retain as the arrival alternative.
Inputs: N + S01.

Passing below
The road traverses the slope rather than delivering us to the castle. A consequential structural alternative, but not yet an earned choice: the road may merely point at sunset, and the castle may be incidental.
Inputs: C.
Four unchanged source images

No conspicuous traveller or sun disk. Unequal scrub marks and broken foreground route make the land active. Castle still large; pale sky alone does not establish sunset.

High-contrast route delivers the eye to a traveller below the castle; large sun disk and tower strongly stage arrival. Powerful value organization, but narrative almost pre-explained.

Banks compress the route and build depth more bodily than S02. Lone figure, mist and oversized castle still resolve the destination strongly.

The longest mist interval and winding path give more delay than S02. Figures and silhouette still supply a familiar destination; softer handling differs from S01.
Trace and limits
Four generated candidates, one native diagnostic, two recorded structural comparisons. Same assistant as artist and critic. The new gate validates evidence records; it cannot certify the artistic reading.
