Paul Gauguin — Vision of the Sermon(Jacob Wrestling with the Angel) · oil on canvas, 1888 · National Galleries of Scotland, NG 1643

Vision of the Sermon delays the reveal of its own subject. Scanning by salience, the instrument reaches Jacob and the angel only at the seventeenth of twenty fixations, after the praying women sixteen times — against a centred portrait (Klimt's Mäda), whose subject is reached at step 4. That is the study's one earned coordinate: true at n=4, needs no segmentation, and now anchored against a control. Everything else is the mechanism under it. The subject is light in structure — within the 4 masses the epistemic layer segments (~29% of canvas), uniqueness and arrangement-weight dissociate: a tiny colour-built mass holds all the construction-uniqueness while weight sits in a large tonal mass (naming that mass "the subject" is C-1, not ablation). It is built in the channel the eye reaches last: the tone builds the structure (the mass survives grayscale), the colour only draws the boundaries — read as arrangement, the chromatic marks are distributed, not hierarchical (dispersion 0.29), so neither channel shows colour building hierarchy, the tonal-skeleton / chromatic-plane thesis proven on both channels. And it sits on a field the luminance lens reads as quiet — the red, which the crowd (48% of the Notan value-mass, 9% of the island mass) and the pure-colour cow both share: edge-quiet territory the default lens under-reads (I-31). Everything here survived three adversarial passes; the overstatements each pass caught are logged where they fell (Entries 08–09).

Entry 01 — Selection, source & condition check

Look at the paint before any number

The brief: a work that stresses the Round-17 additions — the texture-robust Notan mass, the bottom-up scanpath, the tonal-vs-chromatic construction signature, and the opt-in epistemic layer (assumption / indispensability / singularity), which was lifted from a multi-mass instrument and wants several distinct masses split by a void. Vision of the Sermon is almost purpose-built for it: two territories — a tonally-built crowd of Breton women, and Jacob wrestling the angel on a vermilion field — divided by the diagonal apple-tree. Gauguin (d. 1903) is comfortably public-domain; the source was reconstructed from the National Galleries of Scotland OpenSeadragon deep-zoom pyramid to a single 6617×5285 file (aspect 1.252 vs the 91/72.2 = 1.260 canvas, so undistorted).

The pinned source (NG 1643, museum photo by Antonia Reeve, reconstructed from the NGS deep-zoom tiles). Every number in this lab book measures this file at a stated working resolution — object × reproduction chain × scale window (I-10). This is an oil, NOT a substrate-dominated work, so I-12 (β/cbi reading the bare sheet) does not apply.

Condition check, per AGENTS Step 0/1 — looking before measuring, with attention to what will inject false structure (the study's opening instruction from RP):

conditionobservationdecision

border-band film (RP)the paint FILM breaks up at the extreme edge — red thins to bare weave, dark dresses abraderaw does NOT solve this; add a border-band trim test + outer-band readout inspection
The darks: a craquelure network over the black dress (I-11 in its strongest form).
A light passage: thin vermilion over visible canvas weave — the texture that fragments the edge mass.

Entry 02 — Pre-registration

Predictions before the read, so numbers test a hypothesis

Written before running the spine (the full table is in labbook.md §3). The bets that matter for the new areas: construction would read chromatic (fragile_to=grayscale) — a cloisonnist colour field that collapses without hue; scanpath eccentric and restless; assumption a real depth spread (red field shallow, crowd deep); singularity crowning a small mass (the wrestling pair). Two were flagged as genuinely contested at the time — the construction verdict (the tonal crowd could dominate the Notan mass and flip it), and whether bottom-up saliency would confirm the critics' "the red catches the eye first."

Entry 03 — Run 1: the spine & the first-run trust gate

The mass is centred, distributed, and counterweighted

Raw read, no persistence, 2000px working copy. State counterweighted; kernel delta (−0.067,+0.038) near-centre; mask_mode REGION_FIELD (not the TEXTURE_FIELD predicted — the weave did not fragment the edge mask at 2000px); island entropy 0.960 (distributed, Degas-like) with high bridge_cost 0.613 — masses isolated by the red ground. The single densest island is the right-foreground woman's coif (+0.39, 0.00), not the left crowd — the first correction to the eye's "lower-left is the mass" bias.

The island read against the reproduction (raw). Density tracks the white coifs, the tree and the figures; the red field reads mid and the dark dresses low — the system is following Gauguin's luminant masses, not the craquelure. edge_artifact_risk low, crop stable; mass-centre (orange ×) sits just right-of and below frame-centre (white +).
Trust gate — RP's border/surface concerns first. Border-band wear: edge_artifact_risk low, crop stable; trimming the border moves the mass-centre only 0.027 and drops one island — the crowd cut at the edges reads as real structure, not wear. Weave: did not saturate the accent field in the red plane. Both concerns checked and cleared at the gate, not assumed away.

Entry 04 — The accent surface: a flipped prediction

Craquelure SUPPRESSES accents; a second system is chromatic

Step 0 predicted the craquelure would fake accents. The opposite is true. The noisy surface raises the leverage floor, so the raw count under-reads at 6; denoise (Perona–Malik, pm_verdict=meaningful) and ~41 marks emerge — the dark cloisonnist contours plus the light coif highlights. The two raw dark-accents survive PM (so they are real), and the rendered PM field shows the craquelure gone from the darks with the accents sitting on genuine contours — PM reveals, it does not manufacture. Meanwhile the mass/imbalance system is robust to PM (delta moves ~0.05, state unchanged), unlike the Caravaggio.

PM-denoised accent read: the craquelure speckle is gone from the darks; the revealed marks sit on the cloisonnist contour network and coif edges.
The chromatic channel (coalesce 6): a separate 14-mark system on the tree, cow, angel's wing and collars — the warm/colour-boundary grammar the structural lens is blind to (I-7).
Accent count by surface and channel (cap 80). The honest accent count of this painting depends entirely on which surface (raw vs denoised) and which channel (structural vs chromatic) you read — two distinct mark systems, reported as two.
Reading the chromatic system as arrangement (the honest colour-channel test). Cloisonnism is colour-boundary drawing, so the chromatic marks are the painting's actual grammar — and the one channel not blind to a colour question. Read for arrangement (not just counted): the 14 chromatic marks are DISTRIBUTED — dispersion 0.29, centroid near-centre, only 7% in the upper-right vision zone. A spread boundary-field along every colour transition (tree, cow, wing, collars), NOT a focused compositional device pointing anywhere. So even the colour tool does not show colour doing hierarchical structuring — it shows distributed cloisonnist boundary-drawing (the method). The "colour is the engine" claim gets no support from the colour channel either: the study survives its honest opponent, not just the luminance one.

Entry 05 — Audit: resolution, the nose, the cow, the red

Three of RP's observations, chased to numbers

Resolution (I-10). Re-read from the full source at 1400/2000/2800px. Tone, coupling, β, Notan and the construction verdict are resolution-stable; delta and mu are not — delta_y drifts −0.006 → +0.038 → +0.113 and mu 0.36 → 0.30 → 0.54 as fine crowd detail enters the edge mask. Kernel geometry is therefore reported as a resolution range, not a point.

The nose tangency (RP). THREE structural centres — frame (white), edge-mass (orange), Notan (cyan) — converge on the central profile woman's face, and their spread is resolution-stable (0.090 / 0.084 / 0.081 across 1400/2000/2800px). Saliency (magenta) is the outlier, sitting slightly left. So the structure centres on the face; the gaze does not.
The mass is central — read three ways. Three structural centres (frame, edge-mass, Notan) sit within 0.08–0.09 of each other on the central woman, resolution-stable. But stable-and-small is not the same as unusual: three estimators of "where the mass is" will converge on any centred composition (they are three views of one quantity), and offcenter_force z−1.30 (Entry 10) already says the mass is central. So this is "the mass is central, three ways," not an independent finding — earning "the structure centres on the face" would need a non-centred-subject control. A commonly-repeated observation says the tree-trunk follows her head-line (WikiArt), but it traces to no primary source and the geometry is unchecked — an echo, not corroboration (Adversarial audit #2). The bottom-up gaze, meanwhile, is restless, not resting there. The discriminating, in-range evidence is the components: 7 competitive foci, primary_focal_dominance 0.142, dispersion 0.86, identical at all three resolutions. (The derived restlessness index reads 1.0 but that is a clipped ceiling — the raw product is ~1.48, so it functions as a flag, not a discriminating coordinate; the components are what carry the reading, cf. the capped-island-count caution.) The low mass_divergence (0.094) is a centroid artifact of a spread saliency field, not evidence of rest. Centred structure, roving gaze — a divergence. [Corrected from a first draft that read the low divergence as "everything rests on one nose"; Entry 09.]
Structural chronology — the delay, measured as an ORDER fact. A scanpath is a sequence, not a scatter, and this study's best sentence is about sequence. Extending the winner-take-all traversal to 20 fixations and asking where the subject falls: the instrument reaches the coifs, crowd, and field sixteen times before it arrives at Jacob+angel — the subject is reached at step 17 of 20. And it is anchored, not a bare number: the same traversal on a subject-IS-anchor work — Klimt's centred portrait Mäda Primavesi — reaches the girl's face at step 4 of 20, and Bernard's scattered genre scene (no single subject) never resolves one. So Gauguin's subject sits ~4× later in the discovery order than a subject that IS the anchor; "late" has a floor under it. That is the composition delaying the reveal of its own subject, as a calibrated coordinate — and it holds at n=4 (no segmentation). Fenced: bottom-up saliency order is not human viewing order (the instrument reaches the subject late, not "the eye"), and the measure needs the C-1 subject location (Klimt's low-saliency dress centre reads NEVER; the face reads step 4). A candidate new lens class: the order the instrument discovers a work's parts — the one axis the corpus has never had (every other measure reads the finished field at once).

The cow (RP). Genuinely absent from islands and accents — and a tuned chromatic pass at three coalesce settings recovers nothing, so it is a true structural null, not a threshold miss. The zone-read says why: the cow is the most colour-built, least edge/tone object in the painting, more chroma-pure than the red field itself.

Honest zone-read (belief over each object's own mass). Cow colour 0.88, edge/tone ~0.16; the coif is the structural opposite.
The cow: a mid-value, thin-outlined, chroma-only form on the red — 'a different language' (RP). Hidden to every edge/tone/mass system, exposed only to the colour field.

A footnote on where error enters. An earlier draft of this study called this animal a goat; scholarship is consistent that it is a small bucking cow. The correction touches not one number — the pre-semantic instrument only ever found "a chroma-only form on the red." The one unforced error sat in the human naming layer, the layer the study is otherwise most disciplined about: a live demonstration of C-1 (the tool points; the naming is external and can be wrong).

The red's multivalence (RP), measured — with one honest surprise and one trap named. Different subsystems classify the same red pixels differently: divider to the edge-island system (few islands, bridge_cost 0.61 across it), unifier topologically (one connective field touching every figure) — both largely descriptive of what the eye sees. The one non-trivial, measured surprise is the Notan reading: field_void 0.026 → the red is MASS, not void (a mid-value + chromatic squint keeps it, where the edge system drops it). What is NOT a finding (Adversarial audit #2, Entry 09): "colour is displaced to the vision zone." Every spatial-colour scalar is inert or tautological here — β and colour_in_void's void_preference are unchanged by patch-shuffle (1.451 vs null 1.447), and the colour-family centroid (0.128, −0.187) is identical to the raw red-plane centroid. They all just re-describe "the red is large, up-right, and colourful." No Klimt-style displacement is established; that claim from the previous draft is withdrawn.

Entry 06 — The epistemic layer (the headline)

Weight and uniqueness live in different places

Final read with include_consensus=True. Scope, stated up front: the layer segments only 4 masses, ~29% of the canvas — the dense dark praying crowd is almost entirely unlabeled (edge/tone-quiet, like the cow and red). So this reads the segmented masses, not the whole composition. Within them, the two halves of Dependency disagree, and the disagreement is the finding:

The 4 consensus masses over the painting (re-run for the audit): red = Jacob+angel (colour-dominant), gold = central coifs, blue = the lone far-left figure, green = the green-capped woman. Note what is NOT tinted — the dark dresses of the praying crowd, which the mass-based layer cannot see. Any 'crowd' language below means these masses, not the bulk.
massareadominantindispensability (arrangement)singularity (uniqueness)

central coifs16.7%tone0.122−0.086
green-cap woman3.4%tone0.078−0.144
Indispensability (arrangement weight) vs singularity (construction uniqueness), per mass, dot size ∝ area. Jacob+angel (red, 2.4%) is top-left — most singular, least indispensable. The far-left figure is bottom-right — most indispensable (large, arrangement-central among the masses), redundant in construction. Exactly the area-bias B5 (singularity) exists to rescue. Only 4 masses (~29% of canvas): n=4 uEDI is fragile, so read the direction, not the decimals.
The finding, stated at the confidence the measurement licenses. The headline is NOT "the subject is not the structural anchor" — that speaks for the whole painting, and the layer saw 29% of it. What the layer establishes, and all it does: within the four segmented masses, uniqueness and arrangement-weight DISSOCIATE — construction-uniqueness goes to the tiny colour-built wrestling pair (singularity 0.34; the three tonal masses are redundant at ≤−0.086), while arrangement-weight goes to a spatially-isolated tonal figure. That dissociation is true at n=4. The reading "the subject is not the anchor" is then downstream of the C-1 label map (which names the singular mass Jacob+angel) and of the crowd being measured by OTHER tools (below), not something ablation proves. [confirmatory] on the singularity bet; a predicted-against correction on indispensability. And the crowd — the arm the epistemic layer cannot see — is NOT left to inference: measured directly (Entry 09), the dark praying crowd (35% of frame) holds 48% of the Notan value-mass but only 9% of the island density-mass — the tonal ballast, heavy in value, edge-quiet. So "arrangement weight is not in the crowd" holds for edge-structure (9%), while the crowd is not weightless. And the isolation check (Entry 09) shows the ranking is not merely spatial isolation: across the 4 masses the two are near-uncorrelated (n=4, so read the direction, not a coefficient).
Assumption depth ladder. 1.1% of the area is built by all four evidence families; 80.6% by just one. But a lone number has no axis —
— so, RP's biggest-cheap-upgrade: two corpus contrasts on the same ladder. Caravaggio's tenebrist modelling over-determines its structures (4-family) 11× more often than Gauguin's cloisonnism. Now 80.6% single-family is a coordinate. (Chain caveat: contrasts resized to 2000px from different reproduction chains.)

Entry 07 — Null calibration & construction

β is real but spatially inert; the build is not chromatic

Null sweep (900px, n=24 seeds, phase-scramble + patch-shuffle). β is high (0.371) and real, but identical under patch-shuffle (0.371±0.000, z=−0.7): it measures the statistic "colour occupies the drawing-void," not a spatial composition — the "colour where drawing is absent" reading rests on the location map (we can see it is the red field), not on β. DGI grips and sits below both nulls (z=−3 to −8): the composition sits below the centred-gravity null — that is the coordinate. "Authored against gravity" is the frame one brings to it; default_gravity presumes purpose and cannot falsify it from inside (the preamble's caveat), so the finding is the position, not the intention. cbi and mass_divergence both grip.

Does each scalar grip THIS work (I-15)? z vs null under a spectral and a spatial scramble. β's patch-shuffle z≈0 is the key: spatially inert. DGI sits below both nulls (the coordinate).

Construction — the contested bet, lost and instructive. fragile_to = gamma_down, built = tonal, grayscale-survival 0.912 — identical across 1400/2000/2800px. But adversarially: the mass survives every degradation at 0.87–0.93 (spread 0.061), so it is robustly over-determined, and gamma wins by only 0.046. The claim that survives that scrutiny is the narrow one — the structure is not chromatic-built (grayscale barely dents it), not the flat "tonal" label. And that narrow claim is pipeline-stable, not a reading aid: the 0.046 margin is identical across 1400/2000/2800px and under achromatic and chromatic noise at σ 0.008 and 0.02 (Entry 09) — so it is not inside seed noise. It still partially disputes the art-historical "colour is the engine" emphasis: the load-bearing structure is tone and contour (Notan field_void 0.026 reads the red as mass, not void), while the vermilion is a chromatic plane, and a second colour-accent system, riding on top. (Only the finer "tonal vs over-determined" lean is soft; the "not chromatic" sign is firm.)

Entry 08 — Adversarial audit

Made to attack its own findings, and told not to Goldilock

The story came out clean — every finding reinforcing the last — which is exactly when to distrust it. A dedicated pass re-ran the segmentation, checked placements against pixels, tested for degeneracy, and triangulated the art-historical claims to their actual sources. Four claims survived; three were overstated and are narrowed above (with pointers left where they sit, house rule 3).

The category error worth naming. The saliency/scanpath run on luminance(rgb) — blind to chromatic pop-out. Framing a luminance result as refuting a colour-attention claim was a slip. Corrected, it becomes agreement: the red is luminance-quiet because it is a flat symbolic plane, and its pull is chromatic, which this channel does not measure. The finding is real; the earlier framing gave it the wrong opponent.

Entry 09 — Critique-prep hardening

RP's pointed critique, chased to measurements

A second external critique (RP) aimed the critique pass at the study's soft joints. Each was resolved with a measurement rather than a concession; the deliverable above already carries the fixes.

“authored against gravity” / naming the visionreframedrestated as the coordinate (sits below the null) + external identification (C-1); the cow-not-goat slip logged as the C-1 exemplar
The measured finding, and a corroboration held at arm's length. The instrument's own result stands: three structural centres converge on the central woman's face, resolution-stably. A commonly-repeated observation says the tree-trunk's curve follows the head-line of the centre-most figure (WikiArt and secondary descriptions) — but that phrasing traces to no primary scholar or catalogue I could verify, and I have not independently checked the geometry (that the trunk actually tracks her head-line). So it is a suggestive echo, not the "measurement-meets-scholarship" coup the previous draft claimed (Adversarial audit #2). New candidate C-10 (toolkit/CANDIDATES.md): the indispensability↔singularity inversion — "the most construction-unique mass is the least arrangement-load-bearing" — as a portable detector for subject-is-not-the-anchor compositions; n=1, needs ≥2 more works.
Adversarial audit #2 — a fix that overshot, caught on a re-run. The hardening above was itself attacked. Two claims fell: (1) the "colour displaced to the vision zone" spatial story is trivial — the colour-family centroid (0.128, −0.187) is identical to the raw red-plane centroid, and void_preference is inert under patch-shuffle (1.451 vs null 1.447), so after correctly demoting β I replaced it with two equally-empty measures (Entry 05, now corrected); (2) the trunk-follows-head "corroboration" is a weak-source gloss, not verified scholarship (above). Survived: the depth-ladder 11× (coverages comparable; whole-frame measure), and the construction 0.046 (the per-degradation values do move under noise — responsive, not frozen). Lesson banked: never swap a spatially-inert scalar for another without null-checking the replacement.

Entry 10 — Corpus placement & the C-10 test

Where Gauguin sits, and whether the headline generalises

Same-coordinate compare (isr compare vs Matisse / Degas / Caravaggio, all 2000px; z-scores are "who sits where," never significance at n=4, and the four are different reproduction chains). Two standing findings get independent, cross-corpus support: tau z −1.72 — Gauguin has the flattest tonal hierarchy of the four, the cloisonnist flatness confirmed apart from the depth-ladder; and offcenter_force z −1.30 — the most near-centred mass, holding the Entry-05 correction against corpus. Gauguin is also the outlier on highlight_mass (+1.73, the coifs), x_p (+1.67, figures at the frame), and omega (+1.46, the most family-centroid spread).

The compare readout: dispersion table + signature radar, four works in one coordinate space. Gauguin's profile — flattest tone, near-centred, high-key coifs at the periphery.

C-10 test — does the indispensability↔singularity inversion generalise? Ran the epistemic layer on three more works. The result reframes the candidate rather than confirming it:

workmax singularitytop-singular's indispensability rankverdict
Gauguin (vision/crowd)0.34 (strong)LAST of 4inverted, real
Matisse (piano lesson)0.022 (tiny)LAST of 6same sign, but on noise
Klimt Mäda (centred-portrait control)n=2 masses only1 of 2degenerate — identical values
Caravaggio (Calling)≈02 of 3degenerate — no singular mass
C-10 not promoted — and the test found the real precondition. The inversion is only well-defined when a work has a genuinely singular mass (high max-singularity). Only Gauguin does (0.34); Matisse's is 10× weaker, and the two natural controls are degenerate — the coarse consensus segmentation under-resolves the centred portrait (Klimt) to n=2 with identical values, and finds no differentiated singular mass in the Caravaggio. So the candidate is gated on the substrate producing a differentiated singular mass, which the current mass-scale rarely does. Registered as such in CANDIDATES.md — a Gauguin observation with one weak echo, not a validated axis. The blocker is the segmentation, not the idea.

Entry 11 — The Bernard test: appropriation, measured

What Gauguin did to a canvas he owned

The marquee productive-disagreement test (RP). This is not "influence": in Aug 1888 the 20-year-old Émile Bernard painted Breton Women in the Meadow at Pont-Aven with a fully-formed Cloisonnism (Japanese woodblock + medieval stained glass), and exchanged the canvas to Gauguin (40), who had been painting impressionistically that summer. Gauguin absorbed the flat-colour method overnight, immediately made Vision, then marketed himself as the Synthetist "master" and cast Bernard as a disciple — a permanent rupture. So the dispute is near-appropriation of a method Gauguin physically possessed. Source: the Musée d'Orsay oil (RF MO P 2019-1), matched to Gauguin at 850px — the d'Orsay IIIF ceiling, confirmed.

Left: Bernard, Breton Women in the Meadow (green field, 1888). Right: Gauguin, Vision (red field, weeks later). The same Breton women, coifs, black dresses, the girl in the striped dress, and an animal on the flat field — Gauguin transposed the frame onto red and drove a diagonal through it.

The instrument refuses the lazy verdict in both directions — Gauguin's is neither a flatter copy nor uniformly more radical. And an adversarial pass killed the one claim that would have been too convenient:

Five axes, matched 850px, raw values labelled. Gauguin diverges on tonal evenness, high-key punch, and colour autonomy; Bernard wins field-purity; the hue-monopole is EQUAL — the warm/cool 'difference' was a band artifact and is retracted.
axisBernard (green)Gauguin (red)reading
high-key (highlight mass)2%17%Gauguin's brilliant-white coifs — real, not a darker reproduction (mean luminance equal 0.39/0.41, p95 0.65 vs 0.80)
colour autonomy (coupling)−0.01−0.21Gauguin's colour is anti-located to his drawing — RP's push-pull (the red reads behind the figures AND on top). Gap survives CHAIN-MATCHING (degrade Gauguin→Bernard: −0.20→−0.18 vs −0.01), so it is anchored, not a reproduction artifact
field purity (1-family)88.9%80.6%the MEASUREMENT is 'Gauguin less single-family-uniform'; the READING 'he packed more in' (crowd, tree, vision) vs 'less committed to the flat method' is external — the instrument can't distinguish them
hue monopole (band-free ±30°)0.6270.630EQUAL — retraction: colour dominance is the same; the warm/cool gap was a hue-band artifact
composition (grid_asym / imbalance)symmetric, scatteredasymmetric diagonal + visionGauguin dramatised the arrangement
Which way it points. Gauguin appropriated the flat-field method he owned and re-aimed it — not flatter, not more chromatically dominant, but measurably more colour-autonomous (the red decoupled from the drawing, −0.21 vs ~0), more tonally dramatic (high-key coif punch), and more compositionally charged (the diagonal, the exaggerated perspective, the discoverable cow — a push-pull field of tension). Bernard's stays the calmer, symmetric, evenly-distributed genre scene with its rhythm devices and, as RP notes, the red-umbrella focal crutch. The instrument cannot say who invented cloisonnism; it can show that Gauguin's canvas is a transformation of the method along colour-autonomy and drama, not a copy — the exact distinction the appropriation charge turns on.
Adversarial pass on this test (one fell, two survived). RETRACTED: "Gauguin a more committed chromatic monopole" — a temperature-band artifact (red sits in the warm band, green straddles it); band-free hue concentration is equal (0.627 vs 0.630). SURVIVED: the high-key punch (not a darker reproduction) and the colour-autonomy decoupling (stable at 850 and 1200px). Caveats carried: n=2 compare (z-scores trivial, raw directions only); 850px is the d'Orsay ceiling and the chains differ, so cbi and fine-structure are NOT quoted across the pair (I-25/I-10).

Entry 12 — Triangulation & close-out

Where the instrument meets, and disputes, the critics

External readings were consulted after the independent eye-first read, for grounding not steering (full notes in labbook.md §7). The consensus is stable: the diagonal tree organises the canvas into reality vs vision; the vermilion is deliberately non-naturalistic — a symbolic, dreamlike field, not a depicted lit space; flat cloisonnist colour under strong dark contours; an abrupt scale shift; Hokusai's sumo wrestlers behind the Jacob/angel pair. Where the instrument meets this it agrees and refines: its luminance-salience reads the red as a flat, non-attracting plane — top-3% saliency hotspots are 87% on the left coif contours, near-zero on the red — which is exactly what a symbolic, non-naturalistic field (rather than a lit surface) should be in luminance terms. Stated as a caveat, not a coup (Entry 08): the ISR saliency runs on luminance and is blind to chromatic pop-out, so it says nothing about the red's colour pull; the red's force is chromatic and symbolic, and the luminance channel correctly does not register it. Gauguin's stated deliberate abstraction ("Art is an abstraction… dream before nature") is the clean anchor: the presumption of purpose is unusually safe here, but only for the flatness being authored, not for its quality.

Study lab book in a solid place, 2026-07-27. Open to the critique pass (skills/isr-critique) on RP's confirmation. The one-line thesis to lead a critique with is the chronology one: the composition delays the reveal of its own subject; the tonal-skeleton / chromatic-plane split is the mechanism under it.

Ten bets: four clean hits, one hit-on-components, five predicted-against misses — and the misses carried the study (the construction flip, the near-centre correction, the indispensability inversion, the accent reversal). A reading fitted to numbers has no misses; a reading that tests hypotheses does.

Status

Lab book open, in a solid place — 2026-07-27. Twelve entries; three adversarial passes and two external critiques absorbed; ten pre-registered bets scored; four fail-boxes and every superseded claim logged where it fell (house rule 3). Instrument findings harvested: I-29 (epistemic-layer degeneracy), I-30 (capped-scalar guard), I-31 (default-lens blind spot). Candidate register updated: hue-tension (n=3), C-10 (n=1, not promoted). Owed to close-out: OBSERVATIONS.md Study-14 gather, the critique essay on confirmation, and a commit (this all lives in the working tree). No number retracted without its replacement measured.
