# Critique of gpt1 (sheet 5, ChatGPT refinement)

Inputs: gpt1.png; critic/gpt1.packet.txt (canon, tonal, marks, colour, route); the ledger (sheet5/ledger.jsonl) as the build; brief = hybrid-01 s0_brief/BRIEF.md, plus Russell's refine prompt.
Passes written in order by the orchestrating assistant (not independent model calls). Coordinates are gpt1 pixels (1445 x 1089).

## 1. RIDP (from the ledger)
Lineage: (1) authored value plan, no image: figure from behind, low right, no face, a black slab under the knees, upper left open. (2) Hands drew it: masses only, a disc head on a rectangular back. (3) ChatGPT refined it, "you can invent".
Decisions carried through: the placement (low right), the open upper left, the light knee mass, the dark band at the right edge, the black low in the frame.
Defaults that entered at step 3: the back of the head became a face in three-quarter view looking down; the black slab became a cat; the dark band became a chair back; the ground became a scribbled floor.
Peak: step 2 held the figure anonymous and the black as weight only. Lost after it: the anonymity of the turned figure, and the black as a weight with no name.
Return to Sketcher: the structure survived; the generator's inventions are nouns laid on structural slots.

## 2. Sketcher
Gate: the surface declares itself as made (dense hatching, open contour in the knee form).
Three structural failures:
1. Weight piles right and low [dx 0.2264] [dy 0.1047], and edge energy presses the frame [xp 0.4114]: the chair black is welded to the right edge (to my eye).
2. Focus does not survive blurring [focus shift at 64px 0.74]: at a squint the face and the cat compete; with 14 salience clusters [col_focal_count 14] and the largest holding a third [col_primary_focal_dominance 0.3574], nothing leads.
3. The black is not committed [black 0.030, solidity 0.63, rubric 0/2]: the cat's black is broken by internal texture (to my eye: fur strokes and whiskers make it a drawing of a black thing, not a black).
Default geometry: the figure turned toward the frame's centre, the head at an upper third, the cat walking into the open field: a probable staging.
Route: OMEGA (overstrain: load without articulation) [vcli_g 2.956] [sci 2.092], quadrant label "collapse into noise". Agree on the route; the noise is in the floor scribble and the robe hatching, not in the open knees.
One structural move: the black. Keep its place and weight under the open knees; remove what makes it a cat (ears, legs, tail, whiskers); commit its core to the darkest the medium makes. Expect black_area to stay >= 0.02 with higher solidity; focus shift at 64px should fall as the face/cat competition is resolved toward one dark.

## 3. Artist's Lens
What keeps it from being more: every passage is finished to the same degree except the knees.
Delay: the eye arrives at the face at once (resolves at once), then the cat, then rests on the knees. The knee form, open searching lines with a hand resting on it, is the only place that holds.
Three small, reversible moves: (a) take the face back so the hair mass and the hand carry the head; (b) let the floor go to paper so the knees and the black sit on nothing; (c) leave the knee form exactly as it is.
Route language: Ω: counter the face's light with withdrawal, not with more drawing.

## 4. Marrowline
Brief words that set defaults: "seated female figure" (the generator supplied a face to make her a person), "vulnerable" (the downcast face performs it). Words treated as rules and broken: "her face is left indistinct, dissolving into gesture or shadow": the face is the most resolved passage. Words kept: "absence should be intentional" (the knee form, the upper left).
Emblem: "a woman in a robe watches a black cat pass". It summarizes in one phrase: the trope won.
What the image avoids: an unnamed dark. The cat performs weight (omen, familiar, companion) it has not earned in the structure.
Collapse tags: emblem by invention, face resolution, uniform finish. Severity: medium.
Counter-move: unname the black. It costs the story the picture tells; it keeps the weight the structure asked for.

## Handoff (in the drawing machine's tools)
1. Target: squint the cat region (blur and 2 values) so the hand meets a low dark mass, not an animal; then one-black (connect-mass, minInk 0.95, softness guard) along its axis. Preserve its position and extent. Expect: black solidity up, the cat unreadable.
2. Canvas: kneaded-eraser take-back of the face (features only; keep the hair mass). Expect: the head reads as hair and turn; focus moves toward the hand on the knees.
3. Target: lighten the floor scribble to paper (keep a breath of ground under the black and the robe's foot). Expect: quiet share up; the knees sit on nothing.
Must stay unresolved: the knee form and the hand on it.
Do not: add a second figure or object; darken the open field; restore the face because it "looks unfinished".
